I would call myself an architectural and environmental glass artist. My work is intended to enhance and bring a soulfulness to the environments that we spend our lives in - both in the private and public arena. Projects includes commissioned as well as non-commissioned pieces.

Recently completed first major public art project – a glass art installation at Minsmere Chapel ruin on the Suffolk Coast, funded by ACE, local trusts and over 40 individuals. Other work has included French windows, doors , windows, indoor and outdoor sculptures and a hanging wall piece. My method is mainly fusing but has included digital printing, sandblasting and some engraving. I run classes in my studio and hire it out to other artists from time to time.

Nan Akehurst died today
A memorial bench has been unveiled to a much-loved and respected village stalwart credited with spreading happiness and love to hundreds of children.

Nan Akehurst, who died in April aged 74, made a huge contribution over several decades to early years education in Chartham, having moved to the newly-built The Hyde estate in Bolts Hill with her husband Tony in 1979.

Because they had children aged seven, five and three, she very quickly became closely involved in the primary school and then the pre-school playgroup, as well as wider village life.

She went on to become instrumental in the upbringing of two generations of village children after helping to organise the Chartham pre-school p laygroup.

Her involvement in the playgroup ran until 1994, and she was also chairman of its committee for 13 years.

The playgroup eventually morphed into a nursery on the site of Chartham primary school, where Nan worked as a classroom assistant and subsequently with The Firs Nursery until last year.

Colleagues and parents say she was adored by the children and loved working with them, even supporting the next generation when they themselves became parents.

“She spread happiness and love to hundreds of children,” said her son, Luke.

“Those lives she enhanced will never forget the kindness and love she showed to them.”

Nan provided one-to-one support for children with disabilities and helped run the after

school and holiday clubs and play sessions.

She served as a school governor at Chartham Primary School for 13 years, helping children with their reading, and was a committee member of the Friends of the School, organising fundraising jumble sales and fetes.

Ever keen to promote the community, she was also the village correspondent for the Kentish Gazette for 35 years, reporting on all aspects of village life.

She died suddenly at home from heart failure. The memorial bench was bought by the Firs Nursery and is sited in the school grounds.
